Sahodaya School Sports Meet 2015


It was a fun -filled day – for the students of the Sahodaya Schools Kolkata chapter when they celebrated their annual sports meet at SAI grounds on Saturday the 17th of January 2015.

The Sahodaya movement has been initiated by CBSE mainly to introduce and experiment several nationwide programs, projects, activities for education renewal and improvement. Around 22 schools for example Bhavans, Lakhshmipat Singhania Academy, Birla High Schools, Army Public School, GSS, Khalsa Model school, DPS Ruby Park , Apeejay Schools, Kolkata, Indus Valley World School, Kalyani Central Model School, Aditya Academy Barasat, North Point Senior Secondary School to name a few participated in the meet.

The chief guest of the day was Brigadier Arun Sabherwal, Chief Signal Officer of Headquaters, Bengal area of West Bengal. Brigadier was delighted to be a part of the competition and confessed felling ‘nostalgic’ at the venue. In his opening speech, he encouraged the participants to pursue ‘a healthy, wholesome mind and body’ through sports and games. He reminded everyone to accept defeat gracefully. The meet began with the march past of the participating schools followed by a spectacular display by the Pipe Band contingent of Apeejay School, Salt Lake. The commander of the band Sukanya Kak was brilliant in her display with the stick and fetched a round of applause from the gathering. The chief guest referred to the march past as’ a sheer visual treat ‘and the principals of the Sahodaya schools gathered at the venue witnessed with ‘wide-eyed wonder’ the harmonious movements of the pied pipers of Apeejay School, SaltLake.

Earlier in the day, the President of Sahodaya Schools, Ms.Rita Chatterjee, Principal, Apeejay Schools,Kolkata advised the participants to be disciplined and display sportsmanship on the field.

The track and field events commenced amidst loud cheer and applause with the 100 m run boys under 17 followed by the under 14 and under 12 races. This was followed by the girls’ races in the same categories. The participants were seen warming up last minute ready to set the tracks on fire with their sheer might and speed. The 200m, 400m and the relay for both boys and girls followed in quick succession and there was a lot of jubilation on the stands each time a friend or an acquaintance won. The final events like the long jumps, shot put were already conducted on Friday, the day of the heats.

The young athletes were given away the prizes by the Secretary, Sahodaya Complex, Mrs.Meena Kak, Dr.(Mrs), Anindita Chatterjee, Principal, Bhavans and Madam. Nandini Sen, Principal, Kalyani Vidyamandir at the end of the meet. Krishnakant Yadav of Kalyani Central Model School, Tilang Sengupta of Apeejay School Park Street, Soumyajit Paul of Xavier Haldia, Yash Beriwal of DPS Ruby Park, Souhridya Bhattacharyya of Apeejay School SaltLake received certificates and medals for their outstanding performance in the flurry of sporting activities. The overall champions of this years’ Sahodaya Sports Meet, Kolkata Chapter was Kalyani Central Model School followed by DPS Ruby Park at a close second. Aditya Academy Barasat was declared third. Ms.Chatterjee, President, Sahodaya Schools declared the meet over on a hopeful note saying “it is encouraging to see them fall yet run… as we do in life…”

As all good things come to an end… so did the Sports day. It ended with good cheer and colourful memories and as Anikesh Mondal, a student from Bhavans remarked, “It was more of a get together and less of a Sports Meet. I am already looking forward to the next edition”
